Coloradans Run to Rehabilitation in 2nd Annual Kaiser Permanente Run the 'Rocks 5K
Participants in American Lung Association of Colorado 5K Take Steps to
Recovery at Red Rocks Park

As noted by Steve Scannapieco, a Denver resident whose life was controlled by drugs and alcohol for 20 years, "Running is great for rehabilitation because it teaches you to set and reach both short and long term goals."

Steve and his fellow AIR Foundation participants are setting goals as they participate in the 2nd annual Kaiser Permanente Run the 'Rocks 5K run/walk on Oct. 12, 2008 at Red Rocks Park in Morrison, Colorado.

Founded in May 2007 by Nicholas and Shane Sterner, father and son and former methamphetamine addicts, The AIR Foundation (Activity Inspired Rehabilitation) helps defeat homelessness and addiction through programs that support and inspire rehabilitation through athletic accomplishment and a positive connection to the community. The AIR Foundation has helped over 100 people since the programs inception. Currently there are over 40 active participants, including individuals from the Denver Rescue Mission and Urban Peak.

This is the first American Lung Association of Colorado event in which The AIR Foundation has participated. As co-founder Nick Sterner noted,

"The American Lung Association of Colorado is a phenomenal cause for our participants to be involved with. The aspects of lung disease that are a matter of choice (eg: smoking) and those which are not a matter of choice (eg: asthma) are absolutely relevant issues for our participants to consider. When our participants see individuals attempting to overcome obstacles over which they have no choice, they hopefully begin to consider how powerful the matter of choice is in their own lives."

Through The AIR Foundation, participants learn to address patterns within themselves and discover in a very literal manner how this pattern of incompletion is affecting their life. The foundation was initiated after a group of men from the Denver Rescue Mission New Life Program participated in the 2007 Colfax Marathon.

Curt Huber, Executive Director for the American Lung Association of Colorado, noted, "We are thrilled to have The AIR Foundation participate in this one-of-a-kind 5K run/walk. The Kaiser Permanente Run the 'Rocks is a unique lung challenge that offers the opportunity for everyone, including those living with lung disease, asthma, or an addiction, to physically and mentally apply themselves for a great cause."

The run/walk is the only event of its kind at Red Rocks Park. The Kaiser Permanente Run the 'Rocks 5K will take place on Oct. 12, 2008 at 8:30am. An anticipated 1,000 Coloradans will walk or run the hilly Red Rocks roads and finish the race by climbing the infamous stadium stairs. Throughout the race, participants will enjoy live music from the local musical sensation, The Hot IQs as well as other local bands. Kaiser Permanente is the title sponsor for Run the 'Rocks. Other top sponsors include, Scottish Re, Wells Fargo and Pfizer. The 5K run/walk fundraiser will support the programs of the American Lung Association of Colorado.
