Fitness studios show holiday spirit all year long
Contributed by: Mona Mesereau on 11/26/2007

Susie McMahon and Roberta Hughes believe that giving back to the community is all in a day's work, every day of the year.

Owners of Parker Pilates and the adjacent Yin Yoga Center, respectively, McMahon and Hughes continuously arrange special events and programs designed to enrich the community.

Recent examples include co-sponsoring a Longaberger Basket Walk for Breast Cancer in September, a children's Community Safety Day in September and a week-long "Pilates for Pink" event in October when proceeds from the week's classes were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

In addition, each week the Yin Yoga Center's Sunday Vinyasa yoga session has been designated by Hughes as a "community class." Students who bring two non-perishable food items for the Parker Food Bank pay only $7 per class, half the price of a regular class.

Parker Pilates also offers a free-to-the-community guided meditation night on the second Wednesday of every month. The practice is open to community members for the mere "price" of two cans of food for the Parker Food Bank.

"Students at the Parker Pilates Center and Yin Yoga Center tend to be healthy in body as well as spirit, and they are always enthusiastic about participating in our special community events," said McMahon, founder of Parker Pilates. "We believe in working not only to feel good, but to feel good about ourselves."

To help students maintain their energy levels and commitment to wellness throughout the year - particularly through the holidays - the sister studios also offer occasional workshops and special classes.

The Yin Yoga Center is presently offering special Tai Chi and Healthy Living classes. And Parker Pilates is featuring a 50/50 Class through the end of December. For $18 per class hour-long class, students receive intensive training in both classical mat and reformer Pilates with two instructors working with teams of four students.

"We all tend to overfeed the body during the holidays, but we often forget to feed the spirit, so we try to offer classes and programs that make it simple and easy for students to regroup and relax before returning to the harried pace of the holidays," said Hughes.

Remembering to take care of yourself during the holidays is an accomplishment, doing that at a place that also gives back to the community should be celebrated!
