Parker Carriage Parade photos
Contributed by: Joe McDaniel on 12/10/2006

Margaret Strnad posted some great photographs of the nightime tree-lighting Festivities in downtown Parker on Saturday 9th December. Here are a few from the early afternoon Christmas Carriage Parade.

The weather was perfect for the occasion, temperatures in the 50s and bright sunshine. The city streets and O'Brien Park are beautifully trimmed with decorations for the Holiday Season (Photo no.1) Thousands of people, family pets, and cars headed for the downtown area. I, like so many others, had to search for a while to find a parking place.

While the Parker Christmas Carriage Parade Judges were adjudicating the parade entries, I was able to award one driver First Place for the worst, most inconsiderate, display of parking.(Photo no.2) Who would have thought to take up four spaces, all to themselves?

The convenient pedestrian underpass (Photo no.3) makes it easy to cross from west to east beneath busy Parker Road. Many area residents do not realize this access is here. In the Spring of this year the tiles in this tunnel were decorated by art students from Chaparral and Ponderosa High Schools and from Sagewood and Sierra Middle Schools. It is a well lit, wide, and beautifully decorated thoroughfare.

I stopped by to take a photograph of one of Santa's reindeers that flew in earlier to enjoy the parade. (Photo no. 4)

Large crowds lined the streets as the Marching Bands from Chaparral (Photo nos. 5 & 6) and Ponderosa High Schools led the parade, beginning at 2 p.m.

A wide variety of horses, large and small (Photo nos. 7, 8 & 9) passed by with riders or drawing carriages. All were beautifully groomed and decked out with ribbons and wreathes.

While this was a colorful, entertaining event, the timing of the parade seemed to a little disorganized with several long, inexplicable, gaps in the procession.

After last years late cancellation due to icy conditions, the weather clearly is the vital key to success.
