I love being with her
Contributed by: John Horton on 2/2/2007

My favorite place is within her embrace. When we meet we hug; our relationship reaffirmed. She is my muse and my refreshing. When I'm with her, en-wrapped by her presence, I experience all kinds of wonderful things. At these rendezvous we share intimately and she brings out things in me that I would have never considered. I am amazed we exchange so much when we communicate because she is mute.

I discovered this place long ago and almost missed it. Her appeal was attractive and friendly, not a temptress like the others. Many had told me about her, but it was Isaac Newton who explained to me the benefit and blessing of our inevitable relationship. He stated that his greatest discoveries came from these trysts, and now I find myself addicted to the same private meetings.

She has this remarkable quality, always waiting, always available for me the moment I want to slip away. When I arrive with the baggage of chaos and disappointment and the disheveled appearance of frustration and incongruity, she never complains; she is always eager to greet me and hold me . And with preening patience, she helps rearrange my appearance or mood so that we can frolic or just sit and share intimately.

Her wardrobe is so varied and remarkable. Sometimes we've met on a hillside overlooking the valley when she was wearing sunshine and azure blue sky. Last Saturday she was clothed in gray; it was morning and the moisture was still lingering on everything outside. She was draped with wet autumn leaves and shiny black pavement, silent recipients of the previous night's rain. Areas of the ground were covered with a thick comforter of fallen leaves. Overhead the branches danced slowly allowing the breeze to lead. Everything was coated with quiet. And this morning she is robed in white, lace upon lace in gowns of snow complementing her presence, like when we first met.

When I'm with her our activities are not confined to anything specific. We explore together, whether it is in prayer, writing, analyzing, or just sitting and wondering. And we discover the hidden, the obvious, the simple; we resolve the confusion, because it is here we can harness it on our terms.

Sometimes we take a ball of knots and with patience release the tension. Or we write, sketching our ideas slowly a few words at a time. Then there are those other times when the words erupt like a broken necklace of glass beads bouncing across a wooden floor scattering everywhere. It is later in re-write that we assemble them on a logical strand. In prayer, we can intercede for those whose hurts have touched us, and we can help on a different level dispatching love and hope and healing. We can analyze faults and foibles searching for the elusive cause, or just wonder why and why not.

She gives me strength enabling me to discover my own, uncovering resources hidden deep inside that I did not know existed. I'm inspired to explore more and use what I find confidently. And when I must go, I'm reborn like the phoenix.

She is fragile and at times her presence will fade when I allow the cacophony of busy people and unyielding demands to arrive or interrupt. It is then she retreats overwhelmed by that which is contrary. But it is always a reluctant retreat, and when she departs we share those parting glances of longing as our arms extend and our joined hands resist the inevitable separation.

She is called by many names, quiet, meditation, contemplation, serenity, but the one I prefer is solitude. And wherever we meet, we make sanctuary. That is my favorite place; there with her.
