I was working on the island of Roatan, just off Honduras as a dive shop manager, instructor and dive master.
It was the saturday before thanksgiving 2001, I was due to leave the island after 18 months at the end of the month and travel for 3 months then head off back home to Wales, UK.
On this saturday a a group of about 18 divers came in from a dive shop in Houston, one of the group had put her luggage on the wrong trolley at the airport and it had gone to a different resort. We did not know this until it was located the next morning.
That saturday night it was my turn to drive the staff home, so I took this beautiful young lady along with me for the ride and check at the airport on the way back, hence it was closed.
We started talking, with only a couple of years between us we had alot in common and really got on well.
Over the course of the week, we hung out together, I was also the group's divemaster so we really did spend quality time together.
At the end of the week we exchanged e mail addresses and phone numbers, its a known fact that 99% of the time these are just lost over time and contact is forgotten.
I really liked Mayda, when I arrived in Miami a couple of weeks later I called her up and we chatted for long periods over the coming weeks.
I bought a van and started to see the states, 23 different states up til now. I only had 3 months here so I made the most of it. Whilst I was in New York, Mayda flew up and we spent a fantastic 3 days there, Mayda seeing snow for the first time {not much snow in Houston}, we found a Korean restaurant where you cooked your own meat, we had a great time.
We were in a bar so I decided to ask Mayda out and be my girl friend, she said yes, but was very hesitent because this was going to be a very long distance relationship and they hardly ever work out.
After that weekend I drove to Housrton, then left for a while before returning and meeting back up in Toronto and the Niagara falls, then Philadelphia and then we went back to my parents in Wales who totally adored her.
I eventually came back and proposed to her in her favouite spot in Houston in her native tongue of spanish, she said yes and we were married in Houston a few months later.
We moved to Denver a couple of years ago and really love this place.
After 4 years of marriage and expecting our first child this august, who sayes long distance relaitionships dont work
