Barbara Belt
, a Parker resident, has spent many, many hours interviewing and recording World War II veterans, and other veterans, for the history project being held by the Library of Congress.
When she first began gathering information from veterans, the only material she had was the packet issued by the Library of Congress. This packet has a formalized set of questions, with instructions on videorecording the soldiers.
Evidently many of the vets took a liking to Barbara, as she has the skill and personality to put the veterans at ease so that they are comfortable sharing their individual stories. This effort to record their unique stories becomes more and more important as the soldiers age.
Now, partly through efforts of fine people such as Barbara, our American history will include these stories as well.
In recognition of her hours of service recording history of our veterans, Barbara Belt was given the History Preservation Award medal at the October meeting of the Smoky Hill Trail Chapter of the National Society Daughters American Revolution. This award is given to one who has participated in long term oral history projects.
These priceless, recorded interviews have been shipped to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, to be kept for future generations, and are available for research on the website for the Library of Congress at http://www.loc.gov/vets.
The project is current and ongoing, and teachers and students are encouraged to log on and participate in this terrific history project. Our veterans have given much of themselves and deserve to be honored in this way.
