DIA baggage system memoirs
Contributed by: Bruce Deffler on 8/14/2007

Since it's conception, DIA and it's bag system has always been in the news. The system was decommissioned without much fanfare at the end of 2006.

I was associated with getting the airport open and suffered through the trials of the bag system for more than seven years. The system never received any favorable press and was the scapegoat for many lost or delayed bags.

The system at the end was successfully delivering over 20,000 bags a day. The cost to redesign the track and meet TSA security requirements were just some of the factors that led to the system's demise.

While much has been written on the failure of the control system by students, consultants and others, we quietly identified the various failures and completed a redesign that kept the system running and out of the public eye until the end.

The effort had been described as changing a tire while the car is still running. I recently heard a report that there are plans for a new automated system for DIA.

It will be interesting to see if they learn from past mistakes or simply rediscover the same ones only time will tell.
