The Parker Economic Development Council (PEDC) honored Parker Fire District Chief
Dan Qualman
as the recipient of the prestigious Cornerstone Award for 2007 at its 11th Annual Cornerstone Award Luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at The Wildlife Experience in Parker.
The Cornerstone Award was created in 1997 to honor leaders in the Parker community who have shown a commitment to help pioneer and nurture the growth and development of Parker. This award recognizes the highest level of civic and professional involvement in our community.
The audience included over 350 leaders in business, government and education, along with many first responders in the firefighting community.
As the keynote speaker for the event,
Michael P. Kercheval
, President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), discussed historical and current trends in the world of retailing and captivated the crowd with his insights on how Parker, Greater Denver, and communities throughout the country and world can utilize retail development as an integral component in an economic development strategy.
Chief Qualman has served as Chief of the Parker Fire Protection District since 1986 and has been instrumental in growing a fledgling combination fire department into a premier emergency services organization recognized as best-in-class at the state and national levels.
The Parker Fire District (PFD) has kept pace with and skillfully anticipated the dramatic growth in the Greater Parker area during the past two decades and has grown from 2 fire stations and 15 firefighters in 1984 to what will be 8 fire stations and 120 firefighters by the end of 2008.
Chief Qualman has also built a legacy of ethical leadership that transcends the PFD and has deeply impacted the Parker Community. He was a leader in the creation of the Parker Fire Safety Foundation, a nonprofit formed to furnish fire and life safety education to the community; in the construction of a Joint Services Facility for the PFD, Town and School District; and in the creation of a Medical Transport Enterprise and a Vehicle Maintenance Enterprise.
Chief Qualman has also served as President of the Colorado State Fire Chiefs; President of the Fallen Firefighters Foundation; and President of the United Fire Dispatch Authority.
Mr. Kercheval is just the third chief staff officer in ICSC's 50-year history and has an impressive and diverse professional background in economics, finance and real estate. He also speaks fluent Spanish and has worked in various capacities in both Central and South America.
Prior to his tenure with the ICSC organization, Mr. Kercheval spent time in multiple capacities with Lend Lease, an Australia-based global real estate firm, and AXA Group and Equitable Life, global life insurance companies with significant real estate portfolios. Now based in Greater New York City, Kercheval remains a traveler, attending ICSC and other shopping center meetings around the globe.
