The Parker Police Department is pleased to announce that local student
Serene Lombardi
was selected as the winner of the DARE America essay contest for Douglas County.
Lombardi's essay was selected as the winner from all participants throughout Douglas County schools. Her essay will now compete in the State competition against all of the other county winners throughout Colorado.
The student essays are written at the end of the DARE program to reflect what they have learned in DARE. Students must show how DARE has affected them personally, and how they will apply it in the future.
Douglas County also awarded Lombardi with the Deputy Ronald M. King Memorial Award for writing the winning essay. The Deputy Ronald M. King Memorial Award will be presented to Lombardi on June 8 at Brunswick Zone.
The award is named for Deputy
Ron King
, who lost his life in the line of duty while working for Douglas County. Only one other student in Parker has won this award in the past.
Parker DARE Officer
Amy Ballard
said, "DARE is a great program where the students can interact with police officers. It humanizes police and it also allows the students to not fear them, so if the student is in trouble they feel comfortable going to the police for help."
Lombardi participated in the DARE program at Iron Horse Elementary School in Parker during the 2007/08 school year as a sixth grader.
