(looking for milestones) and

(wants quirky and unusual stuff) I decided to talk about my opportunity to be photographed with a former President of the United States - code name POTUS.
Not everyone gets a shot at being photographed with POTUS of course. It happened to
Bill Clinton
. As a young man he had his picture taken with Pres.
John F. Kennedy
. This inspired him to become active in public service. My chance came last August during a trip Jan and I made to southern California. We were staying with our kids in Orange County and devoted a half day to visiting the
Richard M. Nixon
Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, just about a 20 minute drive away.
I love history and this museum/library offers a wonderful look into both the life of Nixon and into American Politics. Adjacent to the library is Nixon's childhood home. The house is beautifully preserved. By chance, it was occupied for several decades by the caretaker of an adjacent school and had been well cared-for. The adjoining property was to become the site of the libray, so a visit to the ancestral Nixon home is part of the library tour. The landscaping too is amazing and visitors interested in gardens and flowers will find much to enjoy here.
As we walked through the museum exhibits we came across Richard Nixon himself as he boarded his helicopter (Air Force 1) to make his final exit from the White House. I was able to join in the moment and wave goodbye as well.
I should conclude by saying that this chance encounter did not inspire me to serve out the remaining years of my life in public service - fortunately for our country.

I attended a rally for Al Gore when he ran for president back in 2000. My school group and I were about 100 feet away from the stage. That was my brush with near-presidential greatness.
