A milestone in a few small steps
On 12/19/2006
Contributed by: Joe McDaniel on 12/19/2006

For the first man on the moon one small step was described as a "giant leap for mankind." But for 78 year old Ben Atchley, of Parker, a few paces across a hospital room marks a significant milestone.

Ben was admitted to Presbyterian Aurora Surgery Center Healthsouth in early November for heart surgery. When complete, surgeons had performed quadruple bypass surgery and replaced two faulty heart valves. Ben remained in intensive care, unable to see visitors, except his wife Nancy, for over four weeks.

Finally, on 5th December, he was moved to Aurora North for rehabilitation and what continues to be a long, slow, road to eventual full recovery. After almost 7 weeks since walking into a hospital for life saving and painful surgery, Ben stood up and took his first steps this morning, 19th December. With help from Barbara George, Physiotherapist, he managed to leave his room and walk about 50 feet before taking his first break.

Ben and Nancy Atchley have lived in Hidden River for 6 years. While Ben may not be able to spend this Christmas at home, his prospects are improving daily and he looks forward to spending many Happy, Healthy New Years with his friends and loved ones.
