Task force recommends new police station

A special blue ribbon task force made of local citizens says it's time for Parker to build a new police station.

The task force, which was assembled in May, presented its findings to town council July 14. The report indicated the town has outgrown the police station at 19600 E. Parker Square Drive.

The building originally was built as a savings and loan building before it was converted in 1994.

"The community and the Police Department have grown close to 400 percent since they moved to their current location," the report stated. "It is no longer adequate for a community of this size, much less the future projected population size."

The tight squeeze has brought up some code concerns. The building is the only police station in town.

Other concerns that were cited in the report:

-- The records department is not able to store all of the required paper files for evidence, and is using outside storage for a portion of them, at additional cost.
The holding area for people who must be detained for processing has only two detaining rooms, and only one with a toilet. It only allows for interviewing of one person. This causes extra manpower and risk to properly accommodate detainees.

-- Approximately 1/3 of the building is used for evidence storage required by law, and is filled beyond reasonable maximum capacity. Two outside storage units are being leased at this time, with a growing need.

-- There is no more room for additional offices. Sergeants, lieutenants and detectives are sharing offices.

The task force recommended to build a new police station 75,000- to 95,000-square-foot building complete with a primary and secondary building and room for new courts.

The report also recommended the police station be funded with existing revenue streams. Concerns over current economic indications made the task force reluctant to urge a tax increase.

Town council will take the study's recommendations into consideration, said J.J. Dedmon, who sits on the committee.
