Applewood helps metro families go back-to-school
Contributed by: John Ward on 7/31/2008

For many families in the Denver metro area, the current economic downturn has made it difficult to provide basic necessities for their children. Child poverty has increased 73 percent in Colorado from 2000 to 2006, according to the Colorado Children's Campaign.

To that end, Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric's $1,000 "Caring Community 12 in 12 Giveaway" (www.applewoodfixit.com) will have an impact by supporting Kid's Pages Cares, a nonprofit organization that provides programming to disadvantaged and neglected children in the metro area.

"Whenever we can help a child, we can call it a good day," said John Ward, owner of Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric. "These are tough economic times for many people, but especially families with school-age children. Being able to support such a worthy organization is important to everyone at Applewood."

Kids Pages Cares gives children access to healthcare, basic necessities, and arts and sports programs. In doing so, the organization strives to create positive changes in young lives in the hope of motivating children to continue to achieve.

"We are so grateful for Applewood's support, especially because this year, the need of families is so great," said Ellen Blair, executive director of Kid's Pages Cares. "Families are struggling to provide their children with food and are worried about keeping their homes."

The $1,000 Giveaway will go directly into the nonprofit's emergency services fund, according to Blair.
"We are going to be very overwhelmed at the beginning of the school year," she said. "The money from Applewood will provide school clothes and supplies. And, for some of these children it will be the first time that they wear anything that is new."

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric has served the Denver/Boulder Metro area for more than 35 years. The company has consistently been rated one of the nation's top 10 service companies by their customers and has achieved the Nexstar Network Select Service designation and the 2007 City of Golden Rotary Club's Ethics in Business Award.
