Sheriff: Vehicle break-ins 'unusually' high
Contributed by: Douglas County Sheriffs Office on 6/3/2008

Over the past several weeks, there have been an unusual amount of trespasses to vehicles occurring in Douglas County, specifically in Highlands Ranch and Castle Pines North.

Douglas County Sheriff David A. Weaver is once again asking the public to help fight crime by making sure their car doors are shut and locked, as well as keeping garage doors closed and secured.

This simple task will hopefully prevent a lot of crime from occurring. This plea comes on the tail of numerous recent vehicle trespasses in the Highlands Ranch area and in Castle Pines North.

Some of the common areas that were targeted were vehicles parked in apartments and condos in Highlands Ranch. Investigators are trying to determine if these trespasses are being committed by the same person.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office strongly encourages citizens to lock and secure their car doors, remove any valuable items from their cars and to keep garage doors closed.

"Douglas County is a safe place to live, but we do need to realize that some criminals treat our communities as their own personal shopping malls. Let's work together to send a message that we are not open for business. These simple steps of locking your car doors, closing your garage doors and encouraging your neighbors to do the same will go a long way in preventing crime", stated Sheriff Weaver.

If you have any information on any of these vehicle trespasses, please call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office tip line at 303-660-7579.

If you are looking to take a proactive approach to crime prevention in your neighborhoods, please contact the Community Resource Unit of the Sheriff's Office at 303-660-7544. They can give you information on how to start a Neighborhood Watch Program in your area.
