Idyllwilde community changes concern residents
Contributed by: Kory Nelson on 5/6/2008

72 residents of Idyllwilde met this past Saturday with Steve Curtis, their representative on the Idyllwilde Master Association Board, exploring their options in opposing proposed changes to their community that they perceive as threatening the position of their beloved community coordinator, June Zelkin.

For two consecutive years, the Home Builder's Association of the Denver Metro Area selected Village Home's Idyllwilde community in Parker, near Hilltop Road & Canterberry Parkway, as "Community of the Year."

The second year's selection was undoubtedly due to the completion of Idyllwilde's Grand Hall complex, a great community activity center and a fantastic family pool with spray nozzles and a twisting slide. The residents of Idyllwilde give more credit for their great neighborhood to their Community's Coordinator, June Zelkin, who they believe to be a member of their community.

However, recently, Village Homes has revealed their intent to turn over the complete management of the Idyllwilde Grand Hall to the YMCA, leaving June's position with the Community in doubt. The residents, in seeking to retain June as their Community Coordinator, have launched a petition drive, informing the Idyllwilde Master Association and the YMCA of their concern.

During Saturday's meeting, residents discussed several options, including picketing Village Home's sales offices, and boycotting the YMCA's programs intended to be offered to Idyllwilde residents at the Grand Hall - the financial heart of the YMCA's HOA management plans. With only 3 days, almost 150 signatures of support for June had been obtained.

The circulated petition states that the residents confirmed "their great appreciation, affection, care, and gratitude [to June Zelkin] for the great job she does - but most importantly the wonderful caring manner in which she does it; June is not just the Coordinator, but she is an important part of our community". Village Homes may call it "The Grand Hall", but our kids call it "June's House".

While the final details of the contract have not yet been revealed, time will tell whether Idyllwilde's residents will continue to have a community worthy of "Community of the Year" awards, with the best of the YMCA's programs and pool management combined with the personal touch of June Zelkin, who is so adored, or a vacant community center and angry residents picketing in front of Village Home's sales offices.

Personally I hope for the first option.

As a local Realtor, I can say that while Idyllwilde's physical community center is a great selling feature for the development itself, June's hard work is what has made the bricks and mortar feel like a "community"-which isn't always easy with new developments. Great article-I'm sure folks outside the community were unaware of this issue.
