Blue Thunder Memorial Ride raises more than $6K

The ninth annual "Blue Thunder Memorial Ride" took place June 21 and was a huge success. Over $6,500 was raised for a fund that was named in honor of Douglas County Deputy Ron King who was killed in the line of duty.

The funds are used to award scholarships to local high school seniors. This year was the second year that the motorcycle ride took place as a poker run and was again extremely popular.

There were around 100 participants, to include 8 entries the car show. Pegasus on the square in Castle Rock was the first Poker Card stop and provided a breakfast buffet for all the participants.

The next poker card stops included The Stage Coach in Franktown, Father Guido's in Black Forrest and O'Malleys Pub in Palmer Lake. Tammie Schoemaker with Modern Woodmen of America provided a phenomenal BBQ at Bayou Gulch Park while everyone enjoyed live music and door prize drawings.

The memorial ride raised $4,035 on its own and Modern Woodmen matched funds with $2,500.

Deputy Ron King was a motorcycle officer that was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver. The annual ride and scholarship fund was set up to honor Ron, whose law enforcement career (Douglas County and the State of Colorado), demonstrated his never-ending passion and dedication to the service and protection of the citizens, especially the youth, of Douglas County.
