The Douglas County Sheriff's Office participated in the 25th annual National Night Out celebration, which was held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 5.
This nationwide event brought the citizens of Douglas County together with local law enforcement and emergency services, which participated in a night of "fun, food, and crime prevention."
Target is a proud partner of the 25th annual National Night Out and has made it possible to give every child something to remember the evening.
The general purpose of this event is to reduce property crime, through neighbors getting out of their houses, locking the doors, turning on the lights, and getting to know the neighbors as well as the local law enforcement. This happened through neighborhoods hosting block parties, which were attended by deputies from the sheriff's office, fire personnel from local fire stations, and many other special guests.
The event itself is run through the neighborhood watch program in Douglas County, which boasts to have over 300 groups countywide. These groups then sign up with the community resource unit to have visits by a huge array of "special guests."
The visits consisted of any of the following groups; K-9's and their handlers, motorcycles, Race-A-Cop car, patrol car, jail bus, crime scene van, swat team member, park ranger, McGruff the Crime Dog, bike officers, fire fighters and their engines, and many more. These visits not only seem to build a stronger communication between the citizens and the local emergency services personnel but it also shows that the community takes an active role in crime prevention.
Even though the night was fun filled, citizens still need to have good crime prevention sense. Remember to shut your garage door, lock the doors, and turn on your porch light.
If your neighborhood wants to participate in a neighborhood watch group, please call the Crime Prevention Unit at 303-660-7544 to get information about signing up.
