More gold for Parker's Senior Olympian
Contributed by: Brenda Arakaki on 9/12/2008

David Rocha, 83, a custodian at Ponderosa High School, has done it again! David started off his summer with the Memorial Day 10K Boulder Boulder Run. David was one of 54,000 runners. He placed third in his age group.

David suffered injuries in a fall while visiting family in Michigan two years ago. It was not an easy road back for him, but he never gave up. Proof that he has fully recovered are the four Gold Medals he brought home from Greeley in June, while participating in The Rocky Mountain Senior Olympic Games. David, already the owner of more than 140 medals, won gold in all four of the events he entered -- the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meter races.

David can often be seen either running around Stroh Ranch, where he lives with his wife, Elizabeth, or on the track at Ponderosa preparing for future events. He invites anyone to come out and run with him.

In talking to David, he told of a time when he was checking out track shoes at Dick's Sporting Goods. He thought to himself, "How blessed I am to be here checking out track shoes at 83 when most men my age are either ill or can hardly walk. I thank God for a long healthy life. I try to be an example to other men, young and old as I encourage them to never give up, just do it and enjoy life!"

Brenda Arakaki is the health assistant at Ponderosa High School.
