Parker police officers will be able to better patrol the streets with the addition of a new GPS navigation system installed into the computers of their cars.
The new system provides a detailed map of the city that gives officers the ability to see both their own and other officers' patrol cars as they're driving. It also maps out coordinates as they respond to a call, which can help save time in emergency situations.
"It just makes it a lot easier for the officer on the road," said Captain
Jim Tsurapas
. "The response time is better and we can get to calls a lot quicker."
The system, called Visinet Mobile, also allows officers to type in license plate numbers of cars and check criminal records of drivers. The technology helps officers work more independently and helps free up the radios for dispatchers.
"With traffic stops, we can do everything by computer," Tsurapas said. "So now, we don't have to call dispatch and tie up the radios. It frees up the air in case somebody needs it in an emergency situation."
Town council approved funding for the system in 2006, according to
Sara Walla
, with the Town of Parker. It cost approximately $4,500 per car to implement, she said.
Eventually, Parker Police hope to interface the system with surrounding law enforcement agencies to help improve communication, Tsurapas said.
"This really helps us respond to the needs of a growing community and a growing department," he said. "It's a huge improvement."
