House Republican Leader Mike May, R-Parker, was presented with this year's "Defender of the American Dream Award" Oct. 4 by the Colorado Association of Homebuilders at its annual awards ceremony.
"We are truly thankful for the leadership Representative May has exhibited on the issues of concern to members of the homebuilder and development community. He understands the need to balance government regulation with the goal of providing housing that's affordable to workers across the socioeconomic spectrum," said Chris Elliott, Government Affairs Committee Chairman for the Colorado Association of Home Builders.
May was selected for the award because of his work on issues of importance to the group, such as private property rights and business issues that help make housing development more affordable.
"Colorado homebuilders greatly contribute to the foundation of our economy and our state, bringing much-needed jobs and revenue into our communities," May said. "It is important that the homebuilders, and other businesses in Colorado be free to operate without the threat of over regulation and unreasonable taxation."
The award is based on legislators' voting record and their willingness to work with the association on bills or amendments.
"In a time when many of the members of the majority party at the legislature embrace increased regulation and higher taxes, it's nice to know we have leaders like Rep. Mike May. His dedication to curbing the growth of government and allowing the free market to work is what allows our industry to further contribute to a healthy economy and provide housing that's attainable to many," said Chris Elliott, Government Affairs Chairman for the Colorado Association of Home Builders.
According to the mission statement for the Colorado Association of Home Builders, the group is the statewide representative of the building industry, serving and representing over 3,800 members and affiliated local associations.
Republican Leader May was on hand to receive the award today during the opening session of the Rocky Mountain Builder Conference.
