Parker, Douglas County partner to extend Chambers Road
An additional mile and a half of Chambers Road opened ahead of schedule last week, providing another north-south route for motorists to get around town.
The project is important to Douglas County as a whole because the county has very few north-south arterials, said Chris Hudson, capital improvements program manager for the Town of Parker. The additional road is designed to reduce traffic volume on Lincoln Avenue and parts of Parker Road, the town's busiest north-south thruways.
The $5 million project extended Chambers Road from Mainstreet to Newlin Gulch Boulevard. It was completed about two months early due to a partnership between Douglas County and the town.
"This is a perfect example of a regional partnership," said Douglas County Commissioner Jack Hilbert.
The day of the opening, Hudson said there were people eager to drive the new road.
"At 10 a.m., I had a lady out here waiting to get through," he said with a chuckle. "I had to tell her to come back at 11:30" for the ribbon cutting.
Council member Gary Lasater also was ready to get in on the action. He jumped in his convertible to be one of the first to drive the road after the ribbon was cut.
"I want to see how fast I can get from here to there," he joked.
The extension will benefit the Douglas County School District by improving the access to Burt.com Stadium, said school board member Emily Hansen. The district's new stadium is located at 11901 Newlin Gulch Blvd.
Debbie Santy, media coordinator for the Double Angel Foundation, said the connection improves access to Double Angel Ballpark, which is sometimes hard for visiting teams to find.
"The signage to the park from Chambers Road will be appreciated by all the out-of-area teams who play at the park each year," she said. "With the DCSD stadium open and the (Hess) reservoir getting closer to completion, this area of Parker is growing into quite a recreational hub."
