The New World Dictionary defines a conspiracy as; "
1. a planning and acting together secretly, especially for an unlawful, or harmful purpose, such as murder, or treason. 2. to planning to act together secretly in order to commit a crime."
Kory Nelson, Assistant District Attorney of the city/county of Denver, Colorado has accused Responsible Dog Owner groups, and especially Responsible Dog Owners of the Western States of fomenting a national conspiracy. Our intended crime? To protect, and preserve the ancient and honorable, and perfectly legal acts of animal ownership, and of the practice of animal husbandry. Our conspiracy is the biggest, most open "secret" in the history of the world. It is easily found by running any search engine.
I believe that Kory Nelson may be far more guilty of conspiracy, than we. He conspires to make dog ownership illegal, incrementally, breed by breed. He conspires to criminalize law abiding dog owners. He conspires to deprive people of their property, dogs. He conspires to make travel unimpeded upon one's legitimate business a crime, if one is accompanied with any of the banned breeds of dog. He conspires to deprive the people of their full use, and enjoyment rights to their real property. He conspires to deprive the people of equal treatment, equal protection. He conspires to deprive the people of their right to a Warranted search.
Responsible Dog Owner groups across the country have acquired letters written by Kory Nelson on the city/county of Denver letterhead to city councils in cities in states other than Colorado in which he offers his assistance in crafting breed specific legislation, in which he boasts of his expertise. Ironically, Kory Nelson shouts longest and loudest about breed specific legislation being a local matter. Mr. Nelson and his family own a dog of a breed on the banned list, a German Shepherd Dog (see the entire list below) Responsible Dog Owner groups are fighting on behalf of Kory Nelson's ownership rights, too. The Aurora, CO city council considered adding the German Shepherd Dog to it's list of ten banned breeds.
Kory Nelson wants to deceive the public into believing that breed specific legislation is only a "pit bull" issue, and that anyone who opposes the banning of dogs by breed is a dog fighter. The truth is that those of us who fight so diligently to support ownership rights in dogs, have fought just as diligently to stop dog fighting, and to promote the general well-being of all domestic pets. Do not be deceived. Look at our websites. Look at our position statements. Look at what we stand for. We stand for the domestic animal owner. We stand for the animal husbandry practitioner. We stand for laws that preserve our ancient, and honorable human traditions, while offering protections to the public.
Elected Officials all swear an Oath of Office to protect the Constitution. Nowhere in the job description of a city council person is there an edict to create punitive actions against law abiding citizens. The city councils that have chosen to enact breed specific dog bans, or restrictions have done just that. A breed ban/restriction punishes a person solely based upon that person's choice of dog breed. No other reason. A breed ban criminalizes a person for owning a dog!! A breed ban rips family pets out of the care and nurture of their loving families, and kills them for no other reason than their physical appearance. No longer do dog owners have the assumption of innocent until PROVEN guilty. Dog owners are GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!!! Is this American justice? We are headed down a very slippery slope in the United States of America. Every one of us should take a very close look at the ramifications of breed specific legislation, and ask ourselves if this is the road that we really want to travel.
Traditional animal husbandry practices are under political attack in the United States of America. Domestic animal ownership, and use is being stripped out of our hands by city, municipal, county, state, and federal legislatures at the urging of politically powerful, and moneyed animal rights groups. Animals are being blamed by legislative bodies for human failure to be responsible.
The following list of dog breeds are named in breed specific dog ordinances that have been proposed, passed, or tabled across the United States. Some of these breeds are listed in wolf-hybrid bans, actually wolf-hybrid bans are more all encompassing due to common theory placing all dogs as descending from wolves. The other breeds are listed under "pit bull" bans. The latest addition to this ever growing list is the Caucasian Shepherd, added in July, 2005 bringing the breed total to fifty-six breeds in the USA, plus any mixed breed that contains any of these breeds.
There are no stopgaps in breed specific legislation to prevent the addition of any, or all other breeds of dogs, or even domestic species. Breed specific legislation sets a legal precedent that allows for any or all other breeds of dogs to be added with no public notice, or input. We support reasonable laws that are directed at the dog owner. No dog has the capacity to know it's breed. No dog has the capacity to understand law. No dog can operate outside of it's owner's parameter of responsibility.
Fairfield, Iowa has restricted ownership of any dog that weighs over 100 pounds as being "dangerous"!!!
