Winners were recently announced for the annual creative writing contest held yearly for students in 5th through 12th grades in the area. This writing contest is held by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Smoky Hill Trail Chapter of Parker, as part of their Junior American Citizen events.
This year's theme was "America's Everyday Heroes" and students had the opportunity to write about either past heroes of our nation, or present day heroes in their own lives.
It was interesting to note that over half of the 125 entries from three schools, were written about those people making a positive and active impression in their lives: dads, moms, grandparents, and coaches. The other stories were written about past Presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, and soldiers serving the United States of American now and in the past. Firefighters, paramedics, doctors, and women in history, were also popular heroes.Several civil war era heroes, Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Davis, were also popular for these student's papers.
Each first place winner's entry has been entered in further levels of competiton among their same age group. As a writing wins in a grade level, it might progress to State of Colorado, then Region of Seven Western States, and then ultimately to the National level at their grade level. Those winners are determined in May, and several students from our area have won first and second place at the National level in years past.
The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolutionhas three cornerstones in their mission: Patriotism, Education and Historic Preservation. The Smoky Hill Trail Chapter in Parker is a 60 member chapter and is one of the 50 chapters in the State of Colorado.
