The long and winding road
Contributed by: Nancy Stern-Jude on 8/15/2007

Growing up in the 60s, I had wanted to see the Beatles, but my parents would not allow their teenage daughter to become part of the screaming masses in Chicago.

I moved away and finally settled in Colorado12 years ago. I had heard about Red Rocks Amphitheatre and had even visited the place although no concerts were happening.

Then in August, 2004, I saw an ad for 1964 The Tribute who would be performing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on August 26, 40 years to the day when the Beatles had performed. This was my chance.

I purchased two tickets and begged my friend, Judy Rogers, to go with me. I think she may have regretted it afterwards, but what are friends for anyway?

We arrived that early evening with the sun just starting to go down. What a fantastic venue! The stars came out and the lights of downtown Denver could be seen in the distance.

I held my breath as the band took the stage and from that moment, I was transported back to the 60's. Here was a group who sounded, sang and acted like the Beatles I had never seen perform live.

They poured the music out to us and we took it in. I stood screaming and singing right along with them and the thousands of others who filled the amphitheatre.

All too soon, the music was done and we headed to the steps towards the parking lot. There, under a canopy, were the band members, signing autographs.

I turned to Judy and begged her to please wait so I could stand in line. I was the last person so I could hear them thanking the fans for attending and supporting them.

As I approached "Ringo" I was a giggling teen again asking for his autograph. He thanked me for waiting so long in line and asked if I had enjoyed the concert. These were true performers and true gentlemen.

They informed me they would be flying out the next day to Liverpool to perform. I asked if I could be their valet and they said yes. If I could have abandoned my adult responsibilities, I would have been boarding that plane!

Judy was a true friend waiting for me to get my poster signed by all of the members. We headed to the parking lot laughing and wondering if we would be able to find our car - no problem because there were none left.

I could hear my parents in my head laughing and pointing at their 50-plus-aged daughter who had acted like a teen. You were right, Ma and Pa - I would have been screaming like the masses if I had attended the concert so many years ago.

It was so much sweeter to be part of this event, as an adult and knowing I could still act like a kid!

I look forward to heading down The Long and Winding Road again to see 1964 The Tribute in concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre!
