Robot helps bus drivers promote safety

Bus drivers from Douglas County Schools are working to educate students on bus safety, with a little help from a robot bus named Buster.

The Bus Safety Team, made up of about a dozen bus drivers, puts on safety demonstrations for district elementary schools. The program reminds kids to be safe walking to school, at bus stops and while riding on the bus, said Rita Hoebel, a driver for the Parker area.

After each assembly, Buster, a 3-foot-tall robotic bus, answers kids' questions using a speaker who is a bus driver. The interaction has been a hit with kids, Hoebel said.

With the changes in the bus routes this year, the program has been updated to reflect the new magnet stops, which are located on main corridors.

Kids are reminded to cross in front of the bus, to watch for cars that may not obey the bus stop signs, and to be aware of the "danger zone" - the blind spot that exists 10 feet around the bus, Hoebel said.
