What do our kids really think??
Contributed by: Laura Reish on 6/12/2006

I am a proud mother or a 15-year-old girl. I see her everyday and she amazes me every time. I sit back and think of the things my mother and father said to me back when I was that age, and I kind of have to laugh!!

I remember them telling me that my music was not acceptable for my age group. That my clothes were not to be worn at school because it would send the wrong message..etc. etc., and thinking that my parents had lost their minds!! I never once thought that they were stupid, or wrong about everything, but I remember thinking that they must be really "old fashioned" with their thinking.

So now I sit and wonder, what do our kids really think of us now? I see my daughter, and she loves to dress in black, no heavy makeup or spikes or anything that is not age appropriate, but she still sees me as "old fashioned", and that to me is funny. How do they see us? I was raised in the late 80s , and was done with school by 1990, so I know that I am not "old fashioned." However, do they really think that we don't understand what is going on with the world today?

I try to talk with my daughter on a constant basis, and I am blessed that my daughter and I have a very open relationship, there is really nothing she will NOT tell me. But...from time to time, I laugh because she really thinks that I was never young, that I never listened to rock, or any "good" music!! She looks at my old photos and wonders how I ever dressed the way I did!!

What do they think of us now? Sure, we never were spoiled enough to have to be driven EVERYWHERE, and yes we were able to walk to the store at 10 o'clock at night, and play hide and seek until we could no longer see each other, but those were different times. Now, I would never allow my daughter to walk across Parker to the Safeway or Wal-mart at 10 o'clock at night!! NO WAY!!

I don't think that most kids today really understand how good they have things! I know, I sound like my parents, but hear me out. I walked everywhere I wanted to go, unless it was too far, or the weather was bad. No, it wasn't uphill, both ways, in snow, with no shoes, but I enjoyed the freedom of being on my own, and exploring what was in my path, and loving the fact that once in a while, a cute guy might honk his horn at me.

I really hope that today's children would talk to our parents, and our parents' parents!! I learned so much from them. I hope that one day, my kids will look back and say, "what was I thinking back then," and "what do my kids think of me now???"
