The other side of Costa Rica
Contributed by: Janette Foley on 11/15/2007

Luanne and Kier Fortier of Parker spent fall break on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, far away from the fancy resorts.

The first day was spent on an amazing tour of the area near the capitol city of San Jose, where they saw coffee, banana and pineapple plantations, the Poas volcano, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a cloud forest and so much more.

Next came the nearly 5 hour drive to Pachamama, a cozy B& B in Punta Uva, near the Panama border. It was probably only about 80 miles, but the roads are narrow and winding, crowded with buses, trucks, pedestrians & dogs, requiring constant vigilance while driving.

The experience of living in the jungle for the week included nights filled with the sounds of insects, birds, and howler monkeys. Two days were spent hiking and snorkeling at the amazing Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge where a sea snake, squid, and an octopus were viewed in the beautiful reef.

Near the town of Cahuita is the "Avario," a sloth rescue center. These slow, gentle animals are often injured by autos or victimized by children, who are being taught here to love and respect these creatures. Sloths seem to live only to eat, sleep and cuddle. They were so friendly!

Amazingly, there were no problems with mosquitos this time of year. Although Sept - Oct. is considered the dry season on the Caribbean side, it rained heavily many nights and a bit during the days.

The trees and flowers were beautiful and included ginger and many orchids. Bird lovers would be in heaven here!

Lastly, a trip to the famous live Arenal volcano was almost as thrilling as the nearby Sky Trek zipline tour, where daring tourists zipped more than one-half mile across acanyon, over the jungle canopy! Surely an unforgettable week!

It sounds as if the writer had a good time in Costa Rica. We really found that the guidebook Explore Costa Rica by Harry S. Pariser guided us to places we would never have found on our own. More information is at http://www.ecocostarica.com/
