MAPS MAPS MAPS #5

Many communities have established MASTER STEET and HIGHWAY PLANS, bikeway plans, and GREENWAY PLANS. Street and highway plans use CODES and LEGENDS to categorize streets by the number of lanes, the presence of medians for divided and undivided BOULEVARDS, recognition of scenic easements, and others. BIKEWAY PLANS show the network of paved surfaces designated as bikeways. This does not necessarily mean that the BIKEWAY is a separate entity from a street or sidewalk, but only that it exists, on paper, as part of a COMMUNITY-WIDE SYSTEM.

More and more municipalities are combining open-space preservation with the desire for GREEN-WAY COORIDORS in the effort to retain unique ecosystems while providing opportunities for recreation. Cities like Raleigh, NC, have established EXTENSIVE greenway systems that link several ecosystems and recreational amenities. Guidelines established to respect the integrity of bikeways and greenways must be reviewed in order to maximize the opportunities they provide.

Greenways usually possess typically a long and narrow arrangement. The recreation and aesthetic value of long, narrow corridors connect places and offer paths for local pedestrian traffic. Greenways offer cover for wildlife to nest and burrow and feeding / hunting grounds. When new conservation areas are acquired or new trails constructed, the town conservation director enlist neighborhood volunteers to help trim branches and construct simple walkway platforms across shallow wetlands or soggy soils. People tend to use such trails more often, and look out for their care, when they have been involved in their creation or periodic maintenance.
