Blog Entry 1 of 47 A view from The Hill
Hi, I'm Joey Kirchmer, author of this blog and a community journalist at YourHub.com. I live at the intersection of 13th and Washington, smack dab in the middle of Capitol Hill. If you have news tips about Capitol Hill or the greater Denver area, feel free to e-mail them to me at kirchmerj@yourhub.com. You can also call me at 303-954-2650. Otherwise, sit back, relax and enjoy these blog entries.

How to make a killer paper airplane
Contributed by: Joey Kirchmer/YourHub.com   on 11/29/2006

There were always two things I couldn't quite do in elementary school -- gleet (which is defined as "a technique of spitting that creates a jet of saliva to come through one's two front teeth and project a considerable distance, usually at a target) and make a good paper airplane.

I could never quite get the folding part down for some odd reason. My paper airplanes always looked flat and very non-aero dynamic. I had to spend extra time brushing up on my tetherball skills in order to save face (I was unbeatable by the way and I even had a special glove I would use for intimidation purposes).

Perhaps I could have used the expertise of Ken Blackburn, an aerospace engineer who is, quite simply, the master of paper airplanes. He holds the Guinness Book records for paper airplane time aloft at 27.6 seconds.

Blackburn will be at the Tattered Cover bookstore in Highlands Ranch on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. to sign copies of his book The World Record Paper Airplane Book.

The book has 112 planes ready to tear out, fold, and fly in 20 designs, such as the "stunt" and the "eagle."

The event is free of charge. You can call the Highlands Ranch Tattered Cover at 303-470-7050 for more information.

I too knew it as "gleek." But the minor variations of regional kid culture are fun.

I always thought it was "gleek." Whatever.

My brother and I tried to perfect the art of paper airplane making when I was little. And I broke my glasses playing tetherball. And the next pair I broke playing kickball. Those were the days.
