Construction begins on emergency road

The long-awaited emergency road that will connect the southern portion of the Roxborough Park Residential Community through State Park property and then through the Nelson Ranch will begin construction this month.

According to Randall Teague of the Douglas County Road and Bridge Department, requests for bids for the first portion of the work have been received. An Open House was held in the Roxborough Park Community Center on October 13 to discuss the project with local residents. The emergency road officially called the Triple E---Emergency Egress Easement, has been in the planning stage for over ten years. It will provide an evacuation route in case of emergency. The road will not be available for everyday traffic.

The Roxborough Park community, when the Triple E is completed, will have several evacuation routes in case of, for example, wildfire: (1)The normal entrance and exit using Roxborough Drive, (2) an evacuation route north through the Ravenna subdivision, (3) an emergency road across the Arrowhead Golf Course, and, finally, (4) the new southern egress. An Agreement with Thomas Barenburg, the owner of Nelson Ranch, has been finalized. Phase 1--The first phase is to construct a two-lane gravel roadway from DC-Route 5 to the Indian Creek Subdivision through a portion of Roxborough State Park property and through land owned by Nelson Ranch. Phase 2--The second phase of the plan is to consist of improvements to the existing gravel road (DC-5) that connects the south end of the Roxborough Park community with Phase I of the EEE. The work being proposed on DC-5 will improve drainage and will only widen the road enough to allow two vehicles to pass each other. The physical constraints on either side of the road will permit a width of no more that 16' in places. Construction on the southern portion of the route through the Nelson Ranch property will begin in November and will be completed by May 2010. The section closest to Roxborough Park will begin construction in April 2010 and will be completed by Septermber. Any questions about the project can be directed to the County Road and Bridge Department at 303-660-7480.
