Contributed by:
Aimee Rathburn
on 10/11/2006
Name:
Aimee Rathburn
Office I'm running for: State House, District 1
Age:
49
My family:
Married, no children, one very spoiled dog
What I do:
Nonprofit fund raising and management
My favorite place in town to hang out:
I wish I had time to "hang out"!
What I like most about living here:
The people, the weather, the beauty
My interests and hobbies:
I enjoy cooking, gardening, hunting, competitive skeet shooting, tennis and knitting. I've been training for the past year and a half to try out for the USA Shooting Team in the hope of representing the US at the Olympic Games in Women's Skeet. I am the 2006 Senior National Champion in Women's International Skeet.
What is my favorite thing to cook:
that depends on how hungry I am
People who inspired me (and how) :
My mother, because she always told me I could accomplish anything I put my mind to.
How I have contributed to the community:
I have lived in this Southwest Denver district for 20 years and have a history of community service. I took a leadership role in stopping several threats to the quality of life in Southwest Denver, such as the juvenile jail proposed for Fort Logan, the dance hall proposed for the Bear Valley Mall and the City of Denver's attempt to relocate a wildly disproportionate share of its low-income housing to our neighborhoods.
I resuscitated the Bow Mar Heights Improvement Association after it had lapsed into inactivity, and served as its president for many years. During that time we worked with Parks and Rec to improve our neighborhood parks, increased communication with the District 4 Police Substation and expanded compliance with zoning laws.
My history of public service doesn't stop at the neighborhood association level. I worked for
Bob Crider
as his aide on City Council and at the Auditor's Office, helping the people of Denver solve problems ranging from barking dogs and abandoned cars to getting money the City owed them. I proposed, drafted and helped pass Denver's ordinance against loud car stereos, and amendments to the Building Code to require water-saving fixtures in new construction. Since leaving the City in 1995, I have worked mostly in the nonprofit sector. I've worked with cancer patients, for civil and Constitutional rights and most recently, to protect our precious water supply and forest environment. Past volunteer service includes Kops 'N Kids, the Better Air Campaign, Big Sisters, Chair of the Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission for the 2nd Judicial District, Mountain/Plains Chapter of Pheasants Forever, and the Colorado Sporting Clays Association.
What are the biggest issues facing my district now?
The issues I hear about most in my district are illegal immigration, education, growth, health care and eminent domain abuse. I also hear about graffiti, lack of street lighting and badly maintained roads, but these last three are not issues the State Legislature deals with, so I pass those complaints on to our City Council office.
