Blog Entry 8 of 55 The Lush Report
I'm trying to bring some of the more overlooked stuff from the local music scene. I have to balance it against a full-time real job, so I can't be as thorough as I'd like, but hopefully you'll find some of the stuff that Mark Brown and Ricardo Baca don't cover. If you've got a tip on a great venue for live music or great musicians to check out, e-mail me here. To bookmark this blog, click here.

Exploring inner space with the Swayback
Contributed by: John Zwick   on 5/17/2006

The Swayback agreed after the show to keep a tour diary of their experiences at the South-by-Southwest music fest. To check it out (along with some great photos), click here.

Circumstances beyond my control kept me from catching the mighty Vaux(myspace) when they opened for Aurora boys made good Fear Before the March of Flames(myspace) at the Marquis. I'll admit I've been curious to catch a show at the Marquis - the ersatz Rock Island, since the Rock seemed to prefer going back to being an underage dance club.

But it doesn't always work like that. Instead, I caught Vaux at Denver's hipster HQ the hi-dive. You can't really be in the middle about the dive. Either you love the "friggin' everything is black, including the napkins" feel and the regular hipster/scenester demo, or you hate it. Fine, I'll give that the hi-dive can be great for squeezing into a table at the back corner where nobody can bother you, sipping on your everyday glass of overpriced scotch and taking in the opening bands. Since emotions outside of apathy represent instant scenester death, you can get a good view of the openers without many people in your way.

It's probably less than flattering to the band, but it was the perfect environment to take in power trio The Swayback(myspace). They've become Denver's quintessential opening band, and with their groove-centric, driving jams, it's not hard to figure out why. They're far from undiscovered, but I've never thought they got their due. I'm convinced bass-driven rock bands are some kind of amazing secret that people haven't yet figured out. It's why Kyuss rocked. It's why nobody dares question the awesome metal supremacy of Motrhead. It's got heft. Throw that on a hot selection of fast breakbeats and you've got the Swayback: great, driving jams a guy can really lose himself in. It's kind of a departure from the more straightforward punk rock they were cranking out last year, but any venture into the unknown is a good thing. If there's any band to pull the antisocial drunken wallflower act out for, it's them. Just like Vaux, they're headed to South-by-Southwest, so those of us stuck in the 303 won't hear 'em again until April 5 when they hit up the Larimer Lounge.

Incidentally, the Swayback showed some interest in keeping a tour diary when they ship off to SXSW today. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll be able to come through on it. The Village and Denver editions are psyched to run it.
