Splash of yellow in a sea of pink

The pink ribbon represents breast cancer and anyone who thinks of breast cancer usually associates it with the color pink. One group is trying to become that "splash of yellow in a sea of pink."

I would like to submit my story of The Mickaela Foundation. Started in 2001 in memory of Mickaela Earle-Ross, The Mickaela Foundation (TMF) is a local non-profit organization that raises funds for uninsured breast cancer patients. Mickaela lost her battle with breast cancer in January of 2001 and her dream was to help other women who live in fear- basically, those who go without mammograms or check-ups because they have no way to pay their bills.

The person who is making that dream a reality is her devoted and loving sister, Martine Reeh. Her drive to see her sister's wish come to fruition motivated Martine to found and create was has become The Mickaela Foundation. With help from her board members and countless volunteers, TMF has helped numerous Colorado residents get the help they need to pay off existing bills related to breast cancer. The funds come from several fundraisers throughout the year held by TMF but the foundation relies primarily on acquiring grants as well as other donations.

The biggest "splash of yellow" occurs at the annual Race for the Cure. Anyone participating in the walk with The Mickaela Foundation is given a yellow t-shirt, which actually started in 1999 when they were Team Metro Mart. It was a clever way for them to find each other easily in the crowd. Of course it has grown into something much bigger than that now. The Yellow Team is made up of men, women and children who want to be a part of something special, making their mark in support of uninsured breast cancer patients.

One of the reasons I think The Mickaela Foundation should receive one of your awards is the fact that it takes the time to get to know the applicants. Martine doesn't simply send out the checks- she wants to know everyone's story. After all, she herself has lost someone very close to her in the battle with breast cancer. Anyone who has applied with TMF could tell you how great it is to know that there are people in their corner routing for them in addition to the relief of paid medical bills.
