Blog Entry 1 of 6 Girl Talk
I am new to Denver, a recent college graduate in Journalism. This blog will talk about all the random thoughts that cross a 23-year-old female's mind. My interests are in art, theater and writing and I would like to share that with you, my neighbors. I enjoy being with my friends, my two cats, Jack and Cessie, and plan on experiencing all the fun things to do in Denver.

Cats shows are surprisingly fun

I did my fair share of drinking in college. I guess my motto was: Forget working on my six-pack stomach, I am working on my keg.

Since I graduated and am out of college, drinking and going out to the bar isn't as important to me. I've been looking for something else in my life.

Now that I am living in Denver, I have decided that there is so many other activities I can do besides heading to a bar. I made a deal with my friends to stop our old routines. I decided that we should do something different every weekend that isn't a bar or club. Something that we could say we have never done.

What did we decide on this weekend? A Cat Show.

Thats's right. That wasn't a typo. We went to the Front Range Cat Fanciers Cat Show in Brighton.

Now, I guess you can say that I am already kind of a cat fan. I have two cats, Jack and Cessie. Cessie taught herself how to flush the toilet, so every morning around 6 a.m. she flushes over and over again until I get up and feed her. (Cessie isn't the only cat who knows how to flush, I guess its an epidemic, check out this video on YouTube.) Jack recently taught himself how to play fetch with his toy mice. He plays forever or until my arm gets tired. I grew up in a family with dogs and cats, so I am a total animal lover.

But you haven't seen animals lovers until you go to a cat show. These people are crazy. These cats live better than I do, which isn't saying much on my journalism salary.

One lady actually put a bib around her cat so it wouldn't get water on its fur.

The difference I think between cat shows and dog shows is that dogs seem to enjoy it, while cats get pissed. I caught some cats being manhandled in my pictures and their faces are hilarious.

While I was at the cat show though, I had a thought. I think that cats are undervalued and have a bad reputation.

People often think cats are aloof, unaffectionate and mean. But when people meet my cats, they are always surprised at how friendly, loving and funny they are. (Mine even like their bellies rubbed.)

The cats at the cat show were pretty awesome too. My new favorite breed is the Oriental cats. You know, the cats that are so ugly, their cute.

Homeless cats in the U.S. is growing at an alarming rate. According to FerelCat.com, "The number of feral cats in the U.S. has been estimated at 60 million. Ferals are the wild offspring of domestic cats, and always the result of pet owners who fail to spay or neuter their animals."

The saddest part is that there are millions of cats in cat shelters because of the feral problem and usually are not as adoptable as dogs are.

"Unless they are cared for by a feeder, most die young from disease, starvation, abuse, and accidents - or die violently as food for a predator. The ones that are lucky enough to end up in shelters are usually put to death. Shelters are forced to kill millions of homeless cats each year at a hefty tax bill for citizens, and at an untold emotional burden to shelter workers." -- FeralCat.com

So I guess what I am saying is that, the next time you go to a shelter to get a pet, reconsider the cat.

I didn't realize this entry was going to take such a serious turn, but on a lighter note. I am looking for ideas of what my friends and I can do every weekend. If you have any ideas, let me know. If something exciting is going on in your part of town, you can also post it on our Web site.

Chester loves to have his belly rubbed. He is a very friendly cat. He'll come up to strangers and sniff them -- his way of saying, "Hey, what's up?" I'm biased, though, I really love my cat.

We've always adopted our cats. I think inheriting a potentially crazy animal ups the ante on fun.

A cat bib? Why not just feed it white food?

My writing career began with cats -- they were the main characters in my first short stories ... I once had six of the critters when I grew up in Grand Junction. When we moved to Parker, we couldn't bring them with us because we were moving into a covenant controlled community. Having to leave them with another family was one of the most heart-wrenching things I have ever done. Wish I had been free to come to the show, though I would probably still be sneezing.

Hey, Laura. Delightful first blog, until you got to all the dead cats, that is. I'm one of those rare people who prefers cats over dogs. They don't need attention all the time, but they secretly appreciate it when you notice them. Kind of like me. I'll keep an eye out for something awesome you and your friends can do one weekend.
