Dan Tang makes a mean hot and sour beef
Contributed by: Travis Henry/YourHub.com   on 7/27/2006

Thornton isn't known for its great restaurants. It's what we get for living in the suburbs.

When Thornton residents want to go out to eat, most of our choices consist of the four restaurants that specialize in baby back ribs and sit right next to each other near the highway. You know the places I am talking about. Great for a drink and a burger, but not a place you're going to rave to your friends about.

Heaven Dragon is different. The restaurant is in a strip mall and doesn't impress much from the outside. But like any good restaurant, the food and atmosphere inside make the difference.

Anyone who has visited Heaven Dragon more than twice knows owner Dan Tang. He likes to go around the restaurant shaking hands and checking on his customers. (Full disclosure: He's bought me a beer on the house once or twice.)

Visitors also can't miss the large photos of Dan with prominent politicians -everyone from President George Bush to Thornton Mayor Noel Busck - on the walls near the entrance. Besides a really tasty hot and sour beef dish, Heaven Dragon's claim to fame is that when the president is in town he orders Peking Duck from the restaurant.

Thornton residents swear by Heaven Dragon and are very protective of its reputation.

That's why it stung a bit to read Denver Post columnist Bill Husted's piece on Dan and Heaven Dragon.

I'm not sure who Bill's sources are, but I've seen the letters on the wall from the prez thanking Dan for the food and I've heard Dan's stories about how secret agents watched the food being cooked for George W.

I'm going to have to take Dan's word over yours this time, Bill, no matter who your Deep Throat foodie is.

I just can't let you destroy Thornton's dining dreams.

I like the Chan's Inn on the Northwest Mission Trace Shopping Center on the corner of 120th and Colorado. Competition is good and so is the Hot and Sour Soup.

Excellent blog Travis. Heavan Dragon is our only chinese restaurant. My wife also works for a food service provider, and their drivers say HD has one of the cleanest kitchens in the Metro area. Other good eats on the north end include Old Philly Towne on the northeast corner of Sheridan and 120th for cheesestakes. My wife grew up an hour from Philly and says these are the closest to authentic. Also, for good mexican try Los Pinos at Irma and 104th (about 2-3 miles east of I-25) or El Jimador on Huron between 112th and 120th. Los pinos is always extremely affordable. El Jimador has big servings and lower prices for lunch and gargantuan servings at slightly higher prices for dinner. Dinner portions are big enough for two people to share. The chicken mole' is unbelieveable.
