On The Eve of Bowl Season
Contributed by: Rex Pierce   on 12/20/2007

Since the Bowl Season begins tomorrow (Thursday), I figured it was time to rear my somewhat less than ugly head again. To begin with I thought I would bring back a little quote from my blog from the last week of the season (Week 13):

"A Series of Unfortunate Events - - What say Arkansas or Tennessee beats LSU and USC wins in Tempe. Missouri would of course beat Kansas and then lose to Oklahoma (or Texas) in the Big 12 Championship Game. West Virginia would need to fall to Connecticut or Pittsburgh. This would leave Georgia and Kansas, two teams that didn't even make it to their respective conference championships, and Ohio State vying for the BCS Championship Game. That is unless someone wants to promote Hawaii up from 15th(or Boise State from 19th)."

Do I need to remind anyone that this is exactly what happened except that LSU leap frogged Georgia and Kansas and nobody went for the idea of promoting Hawaii.

By the way, I still have a beef with the system. Ohio State's premier win was against Michigan. Hawaii's was against Boise State. Which team is better? Inarguably, Boise State is. So why is Ohio State in the BCS game and Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl? And what happens if Hawaii trounces Georgia? Do they get any consideration for the title?

So who should play for the title? I can't narrow it down to less than 10. Ohio State, USC, LSU, Oklahoma. Virginia Tech and West Virginia, as major conference champions, deserve a shot. Other teams that deserve a chance, Georgia, Hawaii, Missouri, and Kansas. So why not add a couple more teams and make it a 16 team tournament and let's see who wins.

This week's musings:

I might as well pick the early Bowl games. More often than not, they turn out to be better than the BCS games. Here are my picks (but I wouldn't put any money on them).

Utah beats Navy but it's a good game. Navy just can't catch up if (when) they fall behind. Memphis, Cincinnati, New Mexico and Purdue handle their opponents convincingly. Boise State will destroy East Carolina as will Boston College to Michigan State. TCU and Houston, and Oregon State and Maryland are toss ups. That leaves us the real good games. Las Vegas Bowl - BYU vs. UCLA (Cougars win because of the consistency in coaching). Holiday Bowl - Both teams are overrated but Texas is faster and deeper (for now - give Dennis Erickson a year or two at Arizona State and that may change).

That should get you through the beginning of next week. I'll be back next week to pick the rest of them, including the important games. We'll talk about how badly Ohio State is going to get beat.

Until then - Merry Christmas!!!
