Teens dunkin' for a cure for cancer

"We're Not Dunkin' For Nothin"

Mountain Range High School gym was alive with activity on April 29, 2009 as students gathered at an all school assembly to hear the results of a student-teacher challenge to raise money for the American Cancer Relay for Life at Webster Lake. Students issued a dunk tank challenge to individual teachers to see who could raise the most money for the American Cancer Society. The teacher or student who raised the least amount of money got the word, "You're going down", and had to sit on the platform above the tank. The winner threw the balls at the lever releasing the platform and dropping the loser into the water. When she lost her challenge to the teacher, student Tess Orrino said, "We're not dunkin' for nothin'. It was worth being dunked to help raise money for a cure for cancer." Tess is in the Student Government Class and Youth Advocate for the Webster Lake Relay For Life Planning Committee.

With encouragement from teacher, Brooke Tolmachoff, the teens at this Adams 12 Five Star High School have formed teams for the Webster Lake Relay for Life to be held September 12-13, 2009 in Northglenn. Students and teachers were creative in their ways to raise money, like selling cup cakes, doing flips for a dollar and one teacher even sold Popsicles and allowed the students to eat them during class. The dunk tank challenge raised $6,500 towards the the teams' goal of $11,000. Last year the Mountain Range High School Teams raised an amazing $10,000.

The teams are busy selling $10 luminarias (a lighted bag with the name of a loved one who has or had cancer on it) as well as cardboard hearts for $1 and $2. On September 12th the hearts and the lighted luminaria bags will be placed around Webster Lake as part of the Relay for Life.

The American Cancer Webster Lake Relay for Life will be September 12-13, 2009 at E. B. Rains Park in Northglenn. Teams of 10-12 camp out, walk around the lake, enjoy the entertainment, and have fun. Anyone interested in finding out more about forming a team, or need information about the Relay For Life can call Marge Carlow at 303-452-0264. All proceeds from the Relay for Life go to the American Cancer Society.
