Ask Dot: Bike rider killed on McKay on July 21

Why was Holly closed between 104th and Riverdale on 7/21/08? It was closed for a long period of time; I saw flight for life in one of the farming fields.

-Tracy Ayala, Thornton

Tracy:

At approximetely 4:21 p.m. July 21, The Colorado State Patrol responded to an accident involving a Chevy Cavalier hitting a bicyclist going northbound on McKay Road in Thornton. McKay turns into Holly Road.

The bicyclist, Mora Mario, 41, of Thornton, was airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver in serious condition. He died the next day.

The driver, 18-year-old Michael Rodriguez of Thornton, was charged with one count of careless driving causing death, a class 1 misdemeanor
, punishable by up to 18 months in jail. The driver was distracted and police are still investigating what caused the driver's distraction, said John Hahn, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

The bicyclist was partially in the traffic lane at the time of the accident, which is legal, Hahn said.

McKay Road was closed north and southbound between 104th Avenue and Riverdale Road and wasn't completely reopened until 7:15 p.m., causing delays during rush hour traffic, Hahn said. The Thornton Police Department assisted with traffic control.
