Thornton drivers now have a visible way to show their support for public education and enhance educational opportunities for more than 350,000 public school students; they can purchase the new Colorado "Support Public Education" license plate.
Colorado "Support Public Education" license plates can be purchased by visiting
www.supportcoloradoschools.org. The plates cost $20, in addition to the $25 fee charged by the Department of Motor Vehicles. All money raised through the Colorado "Support Public Education" license plate program will be used by local school districts to support programs that enhance student learning.
The Colorado "Support Public Education" license plate program is sponsored by the Colorado School Foundations Association (CSFA), a consortium of Colorado school foundations, including:
- Adams 14 Education Foundation
- Adams 12 Five-Star Schools Education Association
- Aurora Education Foundation
- Cherry Creek Schools Foundation
- Clear Creek Education Foundation
- Denver Public Schools Foundation
- District 50 Education Foundation
- Douglas County Education Foundation
- Englewood Education Foundation
- Impact on Education (Boulder Valley Schools)
- The Jefferson Foundation
- Littleton Public Schools Foundation
- Mapleton Education Foundation
- Montrose Education Foundation
- Poudre School District Foundation
- Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley
- School District 70 Education Foundation
- Thompson Education Foundation
When a driver purchases a Colorado "Support Public Education" license plate, he or she can specify which foundation will receive the funds from that sale. The foundations will use all license plate proceeds to fund programs and purchase materials that are beyond the budgetary means of their school district.
"Because Colorado ranks 47 th in the nation in education funding as a share of state income, our schools are struggling to meet the needs of today's students," said Mona Sandoval, CSFA chairwoman. "That is why these school foundations are joining forces to create a statewide effort to recognize the importance of public education and the essential need to adequately fund it."
When the Colorado Legislature approved the Colorado "Support Public Education" license plate program in 2006, Colorado joined more than a dozen other states that offer license plates promoting education.
Rep. Nancy Todd, D-Aurora, sponsored the bill creating the program. "By providing a license plate that will promote our shared core value of support for public education, it is our hope that the citizens of Colorado will commit to making the education of our children a priority," said Todd. "Our future rests on the quality of education our children receive today."
