Rural schools & Rural communities
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 2/1/2008

Rural schools and rural communities share common problems. Both are short on resources.

To create a more promising future, they will need to rely on the resources each can bring to that future. What is needed is schooling that will also contribute to the future of rural America.

Schools are frequently the largest concentration of human resources, both in terms of a well educated staff and students with energy and a curiosity to learn if properly challenged. In the real world, you absolutely have to know how to read to functional in society. No exceptions.

Excellence revolves around such factors as strong, positive leadership, high expectations of student and teacher achievement, and respectful relationships among students, teachers, and administrators. Other factors include individual instruction and attention, and emphasis on academic basics, and parental / community involvement and support.

A more promising future for rural America will depend upon the quality of its schools. The mission and design of rural schools may well determine the future of rural communities.
