Student art show at Century Middle School
Contributed by: Judy Kelley on 3/3/2008

The art rooms of Mr. Wimmer and Mrs. Kelley were filled with energy and excitement. Students, teachers and parents were amazed at the creativity and imagination of the projects created by the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students currently in Wimmer's and Kelley's class.

Mr. Wimmer's class project was called "New Skin" and was influenced by the Surrealist movement, more specifically Meret Oppenheim's "Object" (1936), which was a bowl covered in fur. The students took two objects typically not viewed as art and combined them. As hundreds of students, parents and teachers strolled through the art rooms, which looked like galleries, they were intrigued at the unique combinations that created wonderful artworks.

Mrs. Kelley's 7th/ 8th grade classes had learned about the art periods, DaDa, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. The Power point presented artwork from numerous artists in these periods. The student chose an artist whose artwork intriqued them, researched the artist and then created an artwork in the artist's style. The students were allowed to create a 2-D or 3-D piece of artwork and could choose whatever medium they wanted.

Mrs. Kelley's 6th graders had learned about Georgia O'Keefe and a variety of watercolor techniques. They painted flowers using the different techniques and varying values of color. The result was absolutely beautiful paintings.

The art show lasted only one day as Monday, new students will start the next trimester. They are excited to see what new projects the art teachers have in store for them.
