ERICKSON NAMED PRESIDENT-ELECT OF LANGUAGE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
April 4, 2008, Alexandria, VA - Language Educator Janine Erickson was introduced as the new President-Elect of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) at the association's November 2007 annual conference in San Antonio, TX. She will serve in that position on the ACTFL Board of Directors through 2008, assuming the role of President in 2009.
Ms. Erickson holds an M.A. in Foreign Languages, emphasis in Spanish Teaching and has taught in Colorado for 23 years. Currently teaching levels III-V, including both AP Spanish Language and Literature at Horizon High School in Thornton, she is also honorary faculty of the University of Colorado at Denver where she teaches Spanish in the CU Succeed Gold Program. She co-founded and sponsors Horizon's Horacio Quiroga chapter of the Spanish National Honor Society. Previously, she taught English as a Second Language at IBM in Valencia, Spain.
Ms. Erickson is Co-Chair of the State World Language Advisory Council (SWLAC), which advises and facilitates the improvement and development of policies and practices that impact foreign language education in Colorado. She has held leadership positions at the state, regional and national levels including President of the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers, board member of the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching and regional representative on the ACTFL Executive Council. As a member of the ACTFL Executive Council she served as Chair of the Professional Issues Committee, which was responsible for planning the Assembly of Delegates agenda, and on the Year of Languages Working Committee. She has presented at state, regional and national foreign language education conferences. She has been honored with the UNC Excellence in Teaching Award, the Genevieve Overman Memorial Service Award, the AATSP Teacher of the Year Award and induction into the City of Thornton's 50th Anniversary Golden Hall of Fame for her contribution to education.
ACTFL, with a membership of more than 10,500, was established in 1968 as the only national organization that represents teachers and administrators of all languages and at all levels from pre-kindergarten to post-graduate. ACTFL conducts an annual conference and world languages expo each year with more than 600 educational sessions attended by some 6,000 foreign language educators from across the U.S. and the world. The association also publishes Foreign Language Annals and The Language Educator, and developed the Discover Languages ... Discover the World public awareness campaign.
