An eighth-grader from Niver Creek Middle School (NMS) in Thornton received recognition on Jan. 25 for helping a fellow student who was suffering from a seizure.
Hannah Hilson,
who is from Federal Heights, received a certificate from the Thornton fire department at a surprise assembly in her honor in front of students and staff.
"Last year, my daughter took CPR," said
Cherie Weshnak
, Hannah's mother. "Hannah was actually able to put [her CPR training] into effect, remaining calm and stayed right with [the student who suffered from the seizure] until the ambulance and police showed up."
Hilson's grandmother,
Darlene Nix
, said she thought it was amazing that Hilson got an opportunity to learn CPR at NMS. "It was wonderful that they got an opportunity to learn that," she said.
On Dec. 12, Hilson saw a student having a seizure in front of the school. Keeping her composure, Hilson stayed with the student and sent other students for help. She kneeled on the ground beside her friend and held her friend's head to prevent choking.
Ernie Lucero
,school resource officer, said Hilson showed "Eagle pride." "What she did exemplified our eagle pride," he said. "It may seem small to some, but it was phenomenal."
Hilson said she did it because she felt the need to take charge and help her friend, after receiving her certificate.
"I'm proud of her," said Weshnak of her daughter.
