THORNTON --
Gil Chavez III
was nominated by his fifth grade teacher,
Mrs. Erfan
, from Meadow Elementary, for the People to People World Youth Leadership Forum last year.
After an application process, which included getting three references, Gil was selected to participate in the forum set for April 17-23 in Washington D.C.
Since being selected for the forum, Gil has taken on many tasks to earn the money necessary for the trip. This has included mowing lawns, yard sales, yard work, selling old toys on Ebay, and running a candy and novelty store out of the garage. To get merchandise for his store, Gil did jobs for his parents, which in turn he used to buy candy in bulk and novelty toys from a Rhode Island novely wholesaler with the help of his parents via the internet. Due to his hard work and persistence Gil was able to earn the majority of the required $4,000.
Currently, Gil is a 12-year-old sixth grader attending Valley View Elementary. Gil is an excellent student and participates in the school's gifted and talented Gates program. Gil is a dedicated reader who is near the top of his school in reading points and started out this school year reading at a 12th grade level.
This school year, Gil read the Harry Potter series and the dragon themed books Eragon and Eldest. Gil recently participated in the Mapleton Schools Spelling Bee after placing second in the Valley View Spelling Bee. In addition, Gil also plays basketball and baseball through the Adams County Y.M.C.A. and attends Faith Formation classes and mass at Assumption Church.
His current hobbies include playing and watching sports, reading, and playing video games.
Way to go Gil!
