Water World movie set to premiere in April

FEDERAL HEIGHTS – A breezy teen comedy about a 17-year-old surfer who takes a summer job at Water World is set to premiere in theaters next month nearly two years after the movie was filmed.

The Surfer King, which was filmed at Water World during the summer of 2004, will kick off its world premiere April 5 at the Temple Buell Theater in Denver.

The premiere of the movie will include a “Surfer King Beach Party” tentatively featuring many of the cast members, including the star of the film Robby Wayne.

Wayne, who also stars in ABC’s Sons and Daughters, will be joined by fellow cast members Alan Thicke (Growing Pains), Lindsay Wagner (Bionic Woman) and comedian Gabriel Iglesias.

The Aquasonics, dubbed Colorado’s top beach band, are also scheduled to perform.

Bernard Murray, who was an avid fan of Disney teen movies when he was growing up, produced, directed and wrote the movie. He said he’s ecstatic to finally see the movie featured on the big screen.

“It feels great,” Murray said. “And it is a tribute to several good people who had the faith to put in their money to see that it happened. So many things can go wrong along the way, and for us, nothing did.”

Hundreds of roles for extras were cast locally through auditions at Water World, giving many area teens their first taste of Hollywood.

Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District’s communications director Joann Saitta also has a small role in the movie as a judge in the water park’s employee olympics.

“It’s great because the water park is really the star of the movie,” Saitta said. “I think it will be something the community can take pride in.”

The Surfer King follows the summer of Robby Zirpollo, teenage surfer who moves to Colorado from Oceanside, Calif. with his mother and lands a job at a concessions stand at Water World.

Robbie eventually finds himself in the employee olympics where he must convert his ocean surfing skills to the park’s wave pool.

Murray’s two sons worked at Water World and provided him with many of the stories in the film’s script.

“My two sons worked for eight seasons at Water World, starting in grounds and leaving as lifeguard leads,” he said. “We used to sit around the dinner table at night after they would come home, and they would say things like, ‘here's another one for the movie.’”

“This film is a tribute to them, and to the culture and opportunity Water World has created for itself. I was always pleased my sons worked there, and I would tell people, it's like summer camp, they get uniforms, they are supervised, but I don't pay for it. Water World pays them.”

The Surfer King will open at five Denver area theaters two days after its premiere at the Buell Theater. For more information, visit www.thesurferking.com.
