This past weekend Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association held their second competition at Jefferson High School in Edgewater. Winter Guard is an indoor pageantry activity that involves an array of equipment, movement, and skill. Flags, rifles, sabers and other props are utilized to bring music and themes to life while displaying technique, creativity, and expression. There were 21 units from local middle schools, high schools and independent groups performing in this indoor pageantry activity this past weekend in association with the WGI Sport of the Arts.
The winners included, in our Middle School Division, Arvada Middle School with a score of 64.3and North Arvada Middle 56.1; Regional A Division was Mesa Ridge High School from Colorado Springs with a score of 70.8, Douglas County High School 54.2, followed by Standley Lake High School with a 53.7; Scholastic A division was Rampart High School from Colorado Springs with a 71.1 and second place was Arvada West High School with a 66.2 followed by Wheat Ridge Winter Guard with a score of 61.0; In the Independent A Division was Element with a score of 66.5 and Nevella with a 53.4; Independent Open Division saw Phoenix with a score of 44.0; Scholastic Open has two units performing Arapahoe High School 73.4 and Arvada Reds from Arvada High School with a 66.9 along with our Independent World units Opus 10 scored 81.7 and Signature 73.2.
This season the Association will once again host a WGI Regional competition here in Denver. Twenty-nine winter guards from Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Canada will perform at the 2007 Denver Regional on March 17, 2007 to be held at Legacy High School. The local season will conclude at our 2007 Championship competition to be held at the new Broomfield Event Center on March 31. At this competition the pageantry activity is at its best. From here some of our units will travel and be part of the WGI Sport of the Arts World Championships, which is in its 30 th year of existence as the governing body for the competitive winter guard and indoor percussion activities. The "Sport of the Arts" offers a unique blend of artistry and athleticism and is a leader in the pageantry/performs arts community. The city of Dayton will serve as host for the WGI World Championships for the 21 st time. Color Guard World Championships will be held April 12-14, 2007 at the University of Dayton Arena.
