Following a successful Nutcracker season that drew over 8000 people to Macky Auditorium in Boulder Boulder Ballet turns to more contemporary movement methods in its next production, Without Borders. The show's title refers to the versatility of the dancers as well as the Colorado premiere of a ballet by internationally renowned choreographer Robert North.

Without Borders will consist of three works: Light Fandango by Robert North, Diana Krall Songs by Peter Davison, Come Undone by James Wallace. All three works place ballet into new contexts, mixing classical technique with other dance forms, gestures, and movement invention. The resulting concert demonstrates the aesthetic range and physical possibilities of ballet today.

Light Fandango, a 1987 work by world renowned choreographer Robert North, is a series of dances set to the Celtic music. North has become a major international dance maker. He has worked with England's Royal Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Dance Theater of Harlem to name a few. Light Fandango features a cast of eleven dancers. The costumes and choreography whimsically suggest a formal dance, with the elegant ritual of partnering between young men and women, along with the exuberance of youth. The dances range from softly lyrical to highly athletic, often pushing the speed, skill and stamina of the dancers to the limit. "North has been nothing short of brilliantly inventive in the way he plays with the rhythms of the music in the dance, and invents before our eyes a whole new dance language to embody them." The Daily Telegraph, U.K.

Diana Krall Songs is a new staging of a 2005 work, by Boulder Ballet Artistic Director Peter Davison. Described by Dance Magazine as a "consummate movement artist" and the San Francisco Examiner as "a stunning display of sheer virtuosity," Davison brings a fresh approach to choreography, drawn from a diverse career in dance, theater and object manipulation. Davison has re-worked the choreography and costumes from the 2005 version of the work, and added a completely new dance, to showcase the technical and theatrical strength of the current professional company. The five dances balance moods of despair and longing with joy and optimism, and just as Diana Krall's vocal renditions of classic songs are thoroughly contemporary, so the choreography presents innovative pointe work and partnering fueled by the jazz rhythms of Astaire and Rogers.

Come Undone was commissioned by Boulder Ballet and premiered at the outdoor concert Sunday in the Park in June 2006. Without Borders will present the theater premiere of this unique work. Choreographer James Wallace, winner of the Ballet Builders Award for New Choreography in New York City, has choreographed a work that torques the classical ballet technique in original and oddly beautiful ways. The five bare-legged, hoodie-clad dancers present images of emotional unraveling through athletic lifts, floor work, and supple, released movements. The music by Dead Can Dance provides a contemporary operatic background to the dark drama of the work. Without Borders is the perfect concert for those interested in the variety of expressions that the art of ballet is capable of, and a fine follow-up to the classical Nutcracker season.
