Did you know that GODSPELL is the archaic Old English spelling of the word gospel and literally means good news? Godspell is a play conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Most of the non-Schwartz lyrics are from the Episcopal Hymnal. The musical opened off-Broadway in May of 1971, opening only a year after the also religiously themed musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. One of the show's most familiar songs, Day by Day, reached number 13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972. Godspell ran from 1971-1976, making it one of the longest-running off-Broadway musicals. Platte Valley Players is presenting Godspell through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, located in New York City.
In August 2004, the Platte Valley Players (PVP), a community theatre group, was formed and has been creatively evolving ever since. When it comes to stage productions, PVP (based in Brighton) is a well-organized member hands-on operation. For instance, during Godspell's run, PVP will utilize talented members like Kelly Van Oosbree as Choreographer, Dolly Garcia as Stage Manager, Sheri Beattie as Props Mistress, Kevin O'Connell as Box Office/House Manager, Thelma Wright as Costume Consultant, and Nyla Taylor as Production Manager. The Platte Valley Players is dedicated to bringing quality family orientated theatrical stage entertainment to the Brighton community.
