Pilates keeps injuries at bay this winter
Contributed by: Kelly Hurley on 11/12/2007

As the weather changes and thetemperature drops, proper training is necessary for those outdoor activities from ice skating to snowshoeing, from skiiing to sledding.

Pilates Central, a locally-owned business in Westminster, is offering Pilates classes for individuals getting ready to shift gears. Pilates for Winter Sports Conditioning at Pilates Central is designed for beginners to professional athletes prepping to participate in anything from skiing - downhill or cross-country - to snowshoeing, hockey, ice-skating and more. This 55-minute conditioning class includes an intense physical workout to strengthen core muscles, building structural stability, flexibility, and balance maximizing performance, but also helping athletes of all levels remain injury free. Students will use the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, balance boards, rollers, rotator discs, rings, and balls to achieve strength and stability.

Pilates' is a non-impact, full-body strength and flexibility program that improves posture, balance and coordination, reduces stress, alleviates chronic pain and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates consists of approximately 850 different movements performed on mats and specialized equipment. The movements are designed to work several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the body's core-the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region. The result is a balanced approach to exercise where no muscle group is overworked or under-worked, and the body works as an efficient, holistic system in sport and daily activity.

Pilates for Winter Sports Conditioning is held Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at Pilates Central. Single classes begin at $25 per class; a variety of class packages can be purchased starting at $110.

Pilates Central is the only studio in the north-metro Denver area that offers personal training and group classes in Pilates. Experienced and certified instructors teach private and semi-private classes using a variety of state-of-the-art equipment. Also, available are a selection of classes for all levels, including reformer, mat and chair classes for beginners to professional athletes. Pilates Central also offers prenatal Pilates conditioning too.
