Our love story starts 25-years-ago on a beach in
North
Virginia
when we were just kids. I was playing volleyball and he was watching me the whole time, as he tells me. I was very young, much too young to date.
We finally officially met at a party, but I was with someone at the time. All I can remember was the way he kept staring at me all night, regardless if my boyfriend saw or not. It was love at first sight and we later starting dating. I was 16 and he was a little older.
After a few years of dating he was ready to fully commit and settle down. I felt like I was too young to get married, heck I was only 18. My husband often reminds me of how crushed he was that I chose to end our relationship and see what else life had to offer me.
Time passed and I had heard that
Kurt
moved to
Florida
.
A few years and numerous bad relationships later, I found myself thinking of Kurt. I inquired with a mutual friend about him only to find out he was happy and now living with someone in Florida. I continued to think about him often and there were times when I even tried to track him down; but I had no luck.
At that point, I came to realize that he was the only man to truly love me with deep affection and respect and I was now devastated that I had cut him out of my life. I believed at that time, he was my soul mate. Years down the road, a friend of a friend contacted me and asked if I would mind if she gave my number to someone. I obviously asked who and when she said Kurt, my heart just dropped. Of course, I said yes, even though I was currently in another relationship. A few hours later, I came home to find a message from him. I couldn't believe how he sounded exactly the same and how all the feelings I had for him immediately surfaced.
The relationship I was currently in was not going well at all. When I phoned Kurt back that night, outside of my then partner's presence, it was like 12 years never pasted. We caught up on everything in each other's lives and decided that we had ended our relationship abruptly and would like an opportunity to see each other again. During the conversation, I had found out that he was now living in Colorado, a place I had always wanted to visit.
I offered to come to
Colorado
. Within an hour after getting off the plane, it was obvious that we picked up right where we left off.
Within 6 months, I quit my job of 12 years, sold my home and moved to
Colorado
where I now live happily with my soul mate.
We have been married for ten years and life has thrown us some real challenges. About five-and-a-half-years ago, I had an allergic reaction to an arthritis medication which landed me in the ER and then the burn and trauma unit for nearly a month. The illness,
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome,
SJS, nearly killed me. I literally developed 3rd degree burns on 75 percent of my body and nobody thought I would live through it. The only thing that I had to fight for and that pulled me through this was Kurt.
The love and support that he continually showed me through that ordeal was unbelievable. As you can imagine, I was a horrific sight in that condition, but that never affected him; he never left my side. I was unfortunately left with scars and severe eye problems and had years of recovery ahead of me. Kurt lost his business due to the crazy demands that my illness put on us and life has only seemed to get even harder.
But though all this, I am so proud to say that we are more in love then ever...we truly have a gift from God. It's just the two of us with a couple furry friends. We can't have kids due to medical issues, but our life is truly blessed as we have each other. All I can say to others is, if you feel you've found your soul mate, don't let them go, no matter how much time may have passed. If you feel that it was meant to be, then make it happen and don't give up! True love, a love like ours, is here for an eternity and thereafter. I would love to give my husband something back for all he has done for me over the years, he really deserves it. He is a wonderful man and I thank God everyday for allowing me back into his life.
